FAQ

  • How alcoholic is Gin?
The minimum bottled ABV must be 37.5% to be classed as a gin. However, the strength of gin can increase, with Navy strength gins being higher at 57% ABV.
  • Do your products have a shelf life?
Technically, our products do not have a shelf life and will keep indefinitely in the right conditions however, we recommend that they should be consumed within 12 months of purchase (if you can make it last that long!) Ideally, they should be stored air-tight in a cool, dark place, however, over extended periods, our natural flavours may start to fade. Storing in a cool, dark place, particularly away from direct sunlight or sources of heat, will help to preserve the wonderful flavours.
  • What is the difference between Gin and Limoncello?
There are two main differences between gin and Limoncello: firstly, the alcohol percentage. In the UK, a spirit must be bottled at a minimum of 37.5% ABV (alcohol by volume) to be classed as a gin. This means that anything lower cannot be called gin. Secondly, gin must also have a flavour palate of predominantly juniper berries.
  • Why has my Limoncello changed colour?
Our limoncello is 30% ABV and while it wont go off it may fade over time. We do not use any artificial colours or flavours in the Limoncello, which means they will change colour as the natural pigment breaks down, causing the Limoncello to get lighter. This will happen faster in sunlight but will still happen if kept in a cool dark place. There might be a difference due to different batches and of course we have no control how long the product is on a retailers shelf before purchase. You can check when it was made by looking for the bottling date - usually written directly onto the bottom of the bottle. The product is still perfectly safe to drink but we do advise they are best kept in a cool dark place and ideally used within a year of purchase. This also applies to our Lancaster Blue Gin and Morecambe Blackcurrant Gin.
  • Is your gin and vodka gluten free?
Although gin and vodka are made using cereal grains like wheat, barley and rye, the distillation process vaporises the alcohol, which separates it from the grain mixture. As per Coeliac UK, all spirit drinks are safe for people with coeliac disease. However, we must always advise that you drink gin responsibly.
  • Are your products suitable for vegans?
All our spirits are vegan, except Morecambe Toffee Vodka.
  • Which is your best product?
How could we possibly choose a favourite gin among all of our delicious gins? The best gin is really up to you, if you prefer a more classic, botanical-tasting gin, then our Lancaster Dry is a London dry and makes a wonderful base for many cocktails. If you are looking for something stronger in both juniper taste and alcohol volume, then we have our Shields Navy Strength. Perhaps you would like to try something different within the gin category, in which case our Morecambe Citrus Gin is inspired by the sunsets of Morecambe Bay and has both fresh and zesty notes.
